Even if you don't know his name, you've seen his art. Rodney Matthews is a dreamer, but also a hard-working fellow. He's a musician, a writer and one of the most wildly imaginative fantasy artist of all time. His work was extremely important defining the 70s aesthetic and the most amazing thing it's that he's still working to this day!
Last week, I was lucky enough to interview the great Rodney Matthews. I hope you will enjoy our little conversation!
First of all: thank you very much. I've been in love with your characters and landscapes since I was a child.

We all know that 2020 has been as weird as a giant praying mantis defying gravity... I hope everything's well around there! Any interesting projects for 2021?
Yes, strange times, but we are still standing. Regarding new projects, yes again, we are currently working on children's books - we recently released Yendor: The Journey of a Junior Adventurer as a hardback book and audiobook and now we are working on an animated short. Also, I have just commenced work on my fourth art anthology, which I hope will be published early 2021.
Now, let's get to the real meaty stuff: are you more a fantasy or a sci-fi guy?
I have ventured into both territories, but on balance I would term myself an illustrator of fantasy.
You have illustrated many fantasy classics during the years. Your work on Elric is truly legendary... Do you have any favorite fantasy or sci-fi books? Any favorite authors?
I don't seem to have time to read much these days, but when I did, it would have been novels and works by JRR Tolkien, Michael Moorcock, Mervyn Peake, CS Lewis and so on - mostly traditional fantasy.
You are mostly famous for your highly imaginative drawings, but what many people overlook it's that you're also a prog-rock artist! How much time would you say that you dedicate to your musical projects?
The percentage of musical involvement is quite low - perhaps 5%. Although, last year's release of 'Trinity' occupied Sarah (my wife) and me full-time for several months, and is still ongoing!
What kind of music do you hear nowadays?
Like reading, very little, but I am still a prog and jazz fan, listening to King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, Weather Report, MJQ, Dave Brubeck and numerous jazz artists. Strange then, that I have become involved in illustration to accompany much heavier music?!
You still work with Magnum every time they release a new album. Which one of your covers do you think is better or which one do you have more affection for? And which of those albums do you like most on a musical level?
My favourite is 'On a Storyteller's Night', from the point of view of both image and music. Although, image-wise, 'Lost on the Road to Eternity' comes a close second. For the reason of nostalgia though, I'd have to say 'Chase the Dragon' - it was my first for Magnum.
I've heard that you still do your paintings and drawings the traditional way. How much time takes a "Rodney Matthews Original" from start to finish?
On average a piece takes two to three weeks, depending upon the amount of detail required. Magnum stuff is usually quite detailed.
How do you apply such vivid colors to your art? I've never seen anything like it anywhere. Maybe you made a secret pact with the Gods of Chaos?
No "pact" involved, my colours for my mainstream work are pigmented inks, which being transparent, allows the brightness of my art board to shine through.
Do you like video games? And role-playing games?
I am not a gamer of either type myself - no time - yet, design is design, it works to enhance any kind of project or discipline. I have worked on several video games and logos for the likes of Traveller's Tales, Bizarre Creations, Sony 989 (San Diego), Hammerhead, etc.
Lavender Castle was a truly remarkable achievement. Do you have any funny memories of that?
Thank you! 'Lavender Castle' was for me a career highlight, and of course working with the late great Gerry Anderson was a wonderful experience. When I heard about the John Borman version of "The Lord of the Rings" I immediately thought of your art. I think it has a dream-like quality that adjusts perfectly to the psychodelic, fast-paced and philosophical nature of the script. Do you know anything about that project? And, by the way, do you like Excalibur?
No, sorry, I don't know anything about the John Boorman project. Neither have I seen Excalibur.
Do you like fantasy movies? Any personal favorites?
My favourites are the likes of 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit' movies, Bladerunner, Dune, Star Wars.
Last (but not least), do you have any words of wisdom for young artists struggling with finding their own voice?
Words of wisdom! Here, I will borrow from the Holy Bible - "Faith without action is dead", and from myself "an artist without vision is no artist at all", but it is all hard work and after that ... hard work!

Aunque no conozcas su nombre, sin duda has visto su arte. Rodney Matthews es un soñador, pero también un hombre muy trabajador. Músico, escritor y uno de los artistas de fantasía más imaginativos de todos los tiempos. Su trabajo fue extremadamente importante para definir la estética de los 70 y lo más sorprendente de todo es que sigue trabajando a día de hoy.

Todos sabemos que 2020 ha sido más raro que una mantis religiosa gigante desafiando a la gravedad... confío en que todo esté bien por allí. ¿Algún proyecto interesante para 2021?
Sí, son tiempos extraños, pero sigo vivo. Respecto a mis nuevos proyectos, sigo trabajando en libros infantiles. Acabamos de lanzar "Yendor: The Journey of a Junior Adventurer" en tapa dura y como audiolibro. Ahora mismo estamos trabajando en un corto de animación. Además he empezado a trabajar en mi cuarta recopilación de arte, que confío que se publicará el año que viene.
Metámonos ahora en los asuntos que nos interesan de verdad: ¿te gusta más la fantasía o la ciencia ficción?
Me he aventurado en ambos territorios pero, viendo las cosas con perspectiva, creo que debo considerarme un ilustrador de fantasía.
De hecho, tu trabajo ha ilustrado algunos clásicos del género fantástico. Tus dibujos de Elric son verdaderamente legendarios. ¿Tienes algún libro favorito de fantasía (o ciencia ficción)? ¿Algún autor preferido?
No tengo mucho tiempo para leer últimamente, pero, cuando lo hacía, me gustaban las novelas de JRR Tolkien, Michael Moorcock, Mervyn Peake, CS Lewis... ya sabes, lo que llamaríamos grandes clásicos de la fantasía.
Tus dibujos te han hecho mundialmentew famoso pero tampoco quiero dejar de lado tu faceta de artista del rock progresivo. ¿Cuánto tiempo crees que ocupas a tus proyectos musicales?
El porcentaje es muy bajo, quizás un 5%. Sin embargo, el lanzamiento de "Trinity" el año pasado nos ocupó a Sarah (mi mujer) y a mi muchísimo tiempo a lo largo de varios meses.
¿Qué clase de música escuchas hoy día?
Igual que con la lectura, no tengo mucho tiempo, pero todavía me gusta el jazz y el rock progresivo. Escucho a King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, Weather Report, MJQ, Dave Brubeck y un sinfín de artistas del jazz. Siempre me ha resultado extraño que mis dibujos suelan acompañar música mucho más dura.
Todavía trabajas con Magnum cada vez que lanzan un nuevo álbum. De todas las portadas que has dibujado, ¿cuál crees que es la mejor? Y, a nivel musical, ¿cuál de sus discos te gusta más?
Diría que la respuesta a ambas preguntas es "On a Storyteller's Night". En términos puramente visuales, "Lost on the Road to Eternity" está en un muy digno segundo lugar. Sin embargo, la nostalgia a veces nos puede a todos, y me veo obligado a mencionar "Chase the Dragon", mi primer trabajo con la banda.
He leído que aún trabajas con pinceles, al modo tradicional. ¿Cuánto dirías que lleva un "Rodney Matthews" desde su concepción hasta que está terminado?
De media, una ilustración lleva entre dos y tres semanas, dependiendo del nivel de detalles requerido. Las ilustraciones de Magnum suelen ser muy detalladas.
¿Cómo consigues aplicar colores tan vívidos a tus dibujos? No he visto nada parecido en ningún sitio. ¿Quizás hiciste un pacto con los Dioses del Caos?
No hizo falta pacto alguno. mis colores vienen de tintas pigmentadas que, al ser transparentes, permiten que la luminosidad del papel se refleje de una forma especial.
¿Te gustan los vídeo juegos? ¿Y los juegos de rol?
La verdad es que no he jugado demasiado a ninguna de esas cosas. Sin embargo, el diseño gráfico es una disciplina importante y cuando se hace con cariño, mejora cualquier proyecto. He trabajado en varios vídeo juegos y he hecho los logos de cosas como "Traveller's Tales", "Bizarre Creations", "Hammerhead", etc.
Recuerdo la serie "Lavender Castle" como un trabajo realmente notable. ¿Tienes alguna anécdota divertida al respecto?
¡Gracias! "Lavender Castle" es, sin duda, el punto álgido de mi carrera. Fue maravilloso trabajar con Gerry Anderson. Cuando me enteré de la versión de John Boorman de "El señor de los anillos" y su carácter psicodélico, pensé inmediatamente en tu arte. ¿Conoces el proyecto? Y, ya que estamos, ¿te gusta Excalibur?
No, lo siento mucho. No sé nada de ese proyecto ni tampoco he visto Excalibur.
¿Te gusta el cine de fantasía? ¿Alguna película que disfrutes especialmente?
Mis favoritas son "El señor de los anillos" y "El Hobbit". También me gusta mucho Blade runner, Dune, Star Wars...
En último lugar, ¿tienes alguna pequeña perla de sabiduría para artistas jóvenes que estén luchando por encontrar su propia voz?
¡Perlas de sabiduría! Creo que robaré una de la biblia: "la fe, sin obras, es la muerte". También repetiré algo que ya dije en otra ocasión: "un artista sin visión no es un artista en absoluto". Y no olvidemos tampoco que lo más importante es siempre trabajar, trabajar y seguir trabajando.
